CERN experiments observe particle consistent with long-sought Higgs boson

At a seminar held at CERN on July 4, 2012, the ATLAS and CMS experiments presented their latest preliminary results in the search for the long sought Higgs particle. Both experiments observe a new particle in the mass region around 125-126 GeV. More from ATLAS... More from CMS...

ALPHA is breakthrough of the year in Physics World

The ALPHA collaboration announced in late November of 2010 that it had succeeded in trapping 38 antihydrogen "anti-atoms" (an antielectron orbiting an antiproton) for at least 170 ms. This was the first time that antihydrogen had been trapped in a magnetic "bottle." ALPHA plans to attempt antihydrogen spectroscopic measurements in 2011. more...

First collisions in ATLAS

atlas collisionA few days ago, loud cheers and happy faces filled the ATLAS Control Room while the whole detector lit up: protons are back at the experiment's door, and everybody forgot in a second the long year of waiting for the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) to resume operation.more...

ATLAS Experiment Reports Its First Physics Results from the LHC
